When you get past the smart-meter song and dance, it comes down to economics: It's questionable whether consumers will save money on smart meters because utilities earn guaranteed profits on meter installations, which are part of large capital spending programs. One sees on TV these days what I'm sure is supposed to be a public-service announcement voiced on camera by actor Noah Wyle, who for many years played Dr. John Carter on the very popular and just-concluded "ER" series. On behalf of the World Wildlife Fund, Wyle tells of the disastrous effect on polar bears of global warming -- culminating in a lugubrious prediction that the great bears will become extinct in "the lifetime of our children."
